This waldorf inspired community school is based in Nabunulu rural Village on Mayoni-Busia Rd near Matungu Sub County Kakamega County in Western Kenya.
For many years, there was no local school particularly for children. The available schools were very far away and children would struggle to reach them, as parents had problems in getting children to school. It was even worse during the rainy season.
Many parents asked me if we would start a school here and after a very long time spent thinking it over, we were able to start Kindergarten this year (2025) for Pre-primary school 1 and 2. We are looking forward to recruiting grades 1 and 2 in January 2026.
The school started in grass thatch cottages that were used by Village of Hope Community Farms for training in sustainable agriculture, organic and biodynamic farming systems and beekeeping.
The cottages are small in size and do not have a good light. We hope to get support from Friends of the school to put up two classrooms this year so that by January 2026 learners who will be joining grades 1 and 2 can use them.
We have a chairman, one parent representative, two local members from the village, the village area leader, one teacher and Vincent for day to day activities.
Learners come early in the morning and start their lessons up to 10 am when they break for porridge. They will then after break go back to Classes till lunch time. In the afternoon children have a rest, some sleep or very quiet and slow activities till the time to go home by 3pm.
The two teachers accompany learners throughout the day. There is learning, playing and eating. We have very friendly teachers who act like their mothers during the day at school.
Madam Saline Nyawade has a degree in a child development studies, while Madam Jackline Onyango has a certificate in the same line of profession. Very committed teachers who volunteer and sacrifice a lot to see these children acquire learning.
Two trained teachers.
One cook preparing daily meals
One groundsman caring for school compound and garden
One security officer during the night time to keep the school safe.
Vincent Musiko the team leader, managing day to day operations of the school, sustainable agriculture and working with the local community.
